Images
Images are a great way to enhance a student's learning experience. However, when using images, we must keep in mind that they need to be accessible for all students, this means making sure all images include an alternative text or are marked as decorative.
What is Alternate Text (Alt Text)?
To ensure accessibility, all informational images and objects need to be explained in real text somewhere in the document. That real text can be in the form of:
- An alt text description which is read aloud by screen reading software but not seen on screen
- A caption seen by all users and read by screen readers, that includes a description of the image or object’s significance.
- A description in the surrounding paragraph text.
How to Fix Image Issues
- The most common accessibility image issue concerns alt text.
- Describe the image content accurately and succinctly.
- Do not be repeat the same text above or below the image.
- If the image is strictly decorative, mark it as "decorative".
