Santa Ana College Presents Angry Young Women in Low Rise Jeans with High Class Issues

*Production runs October 11-19*

(Santa Ana)—Santa Ana College (SAC) will open Matt Morillo’s Angry Young Women in Low Rise Jeans with High Class Issues on Friday, October 11. Morillo’s trendy hit play had various sold-out runs in New York (including off-Broadway in 2007), Los Angeles, as well as Sydney and Brisbane, Australia. It is now set to become a web series.

SAC brings Angry Young Women to the stage beginning October 11 at Phillips Hall Theatre, 1530 W. 17th St. in Santa Ana. Opening night will feature a talk back with playwright Morillo. Show dates are October 11, 12, 18, and 19 at 8:00 p.m. General admission is $12 and $9.99 for students and seniors. Due to this play’s mature content, it is best suited for adult audiences.

This bold comedy is told in five outrageously funny parts all dealing with young women and the various issues they confront in the post Sex and the City society. The play explores a range of topics, including the unexplainable, yet undeniable differences between men and women; gender differences without determining a winner in the gender wars; and much more. Caffeine-driven, sensitive, often misunderstood, and confronting awkward issues, these young women are frustrated with the ways of the world, the perceptions men have of them and their own complicated reactions to them. How, for example, do you resolve societal contradictions like wearing sexy clothes and still considering yourself a feminist?

The play is divided into five outrageously hilarious parts:

  • Part I: My Last Thong - Soleil has had it with the constantly diminishing size of women’s fashions, and she’s not going to take it anymore!
  • Part II: Playtime in the Park - Rebecca and Sarah discover that the men of their dreams are subject to some objectionable sexual fantasies.
  • Part III: Unprotected Sex - Rachel is having a difficult time handling her birth control pill-induced mood swings.
  • Part IV: The Miseducation of Elissa - If Elissa could change history, she’d ask for one thing: a father who ignored and neglected her. Because of her loving, supportive father she grew up believing men can be trusted and that seems to be backfiring on her.
  • Part V: The Nude Scene - Jennifer, a beautiful actress, is grappling with having second thoughts with her first career topless scene.

Angry Young Women in Low Rise Jeans with High Class Issues is directed by Chris Cannon, SAC assistant professor of theatre.

“This is a hysterical play. I laughed out loud the first time I read it and knew that we had to produce it at SAC,” said Cannon. “It is not just the fact that this play is exceptionally funny, but the idea that the topics covered are not exactly things we like talking about in general society and yet they are presented with such wit that you can’t help but laugh and be challenged at the same time.”
