Counseling and Other Services

Academic Counseling

Full-time counselors are available to assist international students in selecting a program of study to complete their educational and career objectives. Students are helped to explore life goals, clarify educational and career plans, and advise on proper course selection. Counselors are also available to assist students with problems that may affect their academic success.

First semester students are recommend to enroll in Counseling 100 or 116, Education and Career Planning. This course facilitates cultural adaptation, personal assessment, educational and career planning, and an understanding of the American system of higher education. This course meets requirements for a two-year college associate degree and for graduation from the California State University system. Testing & Evaluation

The Counseling Division provides English, mathematics and reading testing to help students determine their present skill level so that they can select appropriate classes with the help of a counselor. Opportunities are also available for career and study skills assessment on a counselor referral basis or through counseling classes. Credential Evaluation Service

Students with previous university or college work in their home country may be eligible for academic credit at Santa Ana or Santiago Canyon College. Credential evaluation services are performed by independent agencies. Discuss this with your counselor before submitting your documents for evaluation. Applications are available in the International Student Center at Santa Ana College. Certified agencies:

SAC University Transfer Center

The Transfer Centers provide information and assistance to students who are preparing to transfer to four-year colleges and universities. Counselors are available to assist students with meeting required coursework for general education and major selection, as well as admission requirements to their university of choice.

Representatives from universities are available to meet with students individually and provide information about programs, requirements and procedures. The Center also maintains a variety of resources to assist in your college search, including website listings, college catalogs, and videos for student check-out. Applications for California State University, University of California and several independent colleges are also available. In addition, the Center sponsors field trips to selected universities. Petitions for graduation should be filed in the Office of Admissions and Records at either Santa Ana College or Santiago Canyon College one semester before the student expects to graduate. Commencement exercises are held once a year at the end of the spring semester for those students who complete the requirements for graduation during the year or the summer session.
