Academic Renewal  (formerly: Academic Renewal Without Course Repetition)

In as much as past performance does not always reflect accurately a student's actual ability, Santa Ana College has established a policy of academic renewal.

  • To be eligible, the student must have completed at least 15 units with a 3.0 G.P.A. or 24 units with a 2.0 G.P.A. or higher in sessions subsequent to the substandard work. All lower division units from all colleges attended will be counted from the semester immediately following the substandard work. These semesters cannot contain any substandard grades.
  • The substandard academic renewal work will not count toward graduation or certification, and the permanent academic record shall be annotated in such a manner that all work remains legible. Up to 30 units combined of below “C” work from all institutions attended may be disregarded in the computation of the grade point average.
  • After an associate degree or general education certification is posted, academic renewal without course repetition is not accepted.
  • Academic Renewal Without Course Repetition is solely the policy of the Rancho Santiago Community College District and may not necessarily be followed by other institutions.
  • Academic Renewal Without Course Repetition may be granted only once by either Santa Ana College or Santiago Canyon College, but not both.

The petition shall require the approval of the Admissions and Guidance Committee, and the permanent academic record shall be annotated in such a manner that all work remains legible. Petition approved work will not count toward graduation or general education certification requirements. Students approved for Academic Renewal are not eligible for Academic Honors. After AA/AS degree or CSU or IGETC certificate has been applied and is posted, academic renewal is not accepted.

Academic renewal at a college in the Rancho Santiago Community College District does not guarantee that other institutions will approve such action. This determination will be made by the respective transfer institutions.
