How do I enroll in the LD Program?

Students may be referred to the program by an instructor, counselor, or community agency, or they may refer themselves.  Each student will receive an initial interview and then be assessed individually.

 

How do I Qualify for the Learning Disabilities Program?

  • Bring us prior documentation of an assessed learning disability or we can assess you for eligibility for learning disability services in our program.

State Learning Disability Eligibility Guidelines:

 According to the Title V regulations which govern the California Community Colleges, the definition of a learning disability is as follows:

Learning disability in California Community College adults is a persistent condition of presumed neurological dysfunction which may also exist with other disabling conditions.  This dysfunction continues despite instruction in standard classroom situations.  Learning-disabled adults, a heterogeneous group, have these common attributes: 

 

a)         average to above average intellectual ability;

b)         severe processing deficit;

c)         severe aptitude-achievement discrepancy(ies):

d)         measured achievement in an instructional or employment setting.

Accommodations and Services

 

Santa Ana College Learning Disability Services & Accommodations Available

S
ervices are offered to assist eligible students in successfully completing their classes:

·        Early registration and assistance

·        Extra time on tests & taking tests in a quiet room

·        Textbooks on CD or MP3

·        Adaptive computer technology – such as programs that will read your books to you and voice recognition software that will type what you speak

·        Note-taking assistance (NCR carbon copy paper)

·        Tape recorders to record your lectures

·        Specialized English and math tutoring

·        Learning strategies training

·        Reduced course load counting as full time student status

·        Graduation requirement course substitution if determined necessary

·        Referral to other campus programs and services

·        Liaison to community agencies



Special Services Classes in the Learning Disability Program
     

  • Special Services N98, Transition to College:

This course is designed to prepare students with disabilities to arrive at college with qualities for academic participation and academic success already developed.  Students will learn how to utilize resources and services and employ strategies for college success. This course takes place at select SAUSD high schools.

 

  • Special Services N62, Assessment of Learning Potential:

This course is designed to determine eligibility for learning disabilities services through an assessment of learning potential and basic skill levels.

 

  • Special Services N63, Advances in Learning Potential:

Instruction to improve learning efficiency by monitoring academic progress, organizational and learning strategies, and providing specialized tutoring.


What High School Students with LD’s Can Do to Facilitate Transition to our Program:

  • Parents can request full psycho-educational battery (including cognitive scores) the student’s senior year

  • Participate in SAC Early Decision and admittance programs

  • Take placement tests with accommodations (extended time)

  • Hand carry testing records to DSPS starting in April for Fall enrollment

  • Summer before beginning college participate in any LD services offered (i.e. math and English preparation)
