PUBLICATIONS
The
Guide for Occupational Exploration (GOE) is a good place to start
because it allows individuals to explore their interests and skills to see
if they relate to the needs of the occupations in a chosen category of
work. The GOE provide codes that can be used to access information
from the Worker Trait Group files (WTG) and the Dictionary of Occupational
Titles (DOT). It provides information on training and
education. Explanation of the various codes is explained in the
front of the book. An alphabetical index is located in the back of
the book to help you locate the occupations you are researching. The
Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) gives descriptions for over
20,000 occupations. They are organized into groups by occupational
field, with similar occupations placed together. Locate the name of
the occupation in the index in the back of the book, then use the
nine-digit code to find the article in the main section of the book.
The DOT is a good resource for writing resumes and preparing for
interviews. The
Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) clusters about 250 occupations
together into families and is updated every two years. The front of
the book has many graphs with predictions of job market trends. The
OOH provides information regarding the nature of the work, required
education, typical working hours, working conditions, expected earnings,
benefits, associations related to the occupation, and outlook of future
demand for workers. The
California Occupational Guide (COG) is published by the State of
California Department of Labor. The COG provides a California
perspective to occupations. The Table of Contents is in the front of
the books 1 to 3. Occupations are listed in alphabetical order; the
occupation is then located by the number listed. Worker
Trait Group Files (WTG Files) are five drawers of file folders
containing information we have collected from professional associations,
newspapers, and other sources. They also contain articles from two
subscription resources, Vocational Biographies, and Chronicle
Guidance. Use GOE numbers to locate file folders, or look up
occupations in a set of three black 3-ring binders that contain our master
index of articles in the Center. Occupational
Guidance (OG) is a national resource published by a private company,
the Finny Co. This resource gives complete information including the
temperament needed for this occupation, as well as advantages and
disadvantages of working in the occupation. The index is in a
separate black binder. Occupations are listed alphabetically.
Locate occupations by volume, unit number, and occupational number in the
colored notebooks. Vocational
Biographies (VB) include personal interviews with people employed in
each occupation. Read about how these individuals got into their
fields, and what a typical workday is like. Articles are located in
the Worker Trait Group Files. Chronicle
Guidance
has complete occupational articles with national
statistics. You will find them in the Worker Trait Group Files.
