The AmeriCorps Foster Youth Mentoring Project at Santa Ana College encourages
students to mentor foster youth from Orange County Social Services.
The AmeriCorps Foster Youth Mentoring Project at Santa Ana College will
recruit, train, and match 39 college students with a minimum of 39 foster
youth and emancipated foster youth ages 14-21.
The mentees will be
identified and selected by the Orange County Social Services Agency on an
annual basis in order to provide mentoring services that will enhance the
youth's chances of developing life skills that will help the mentee transition
to independent living.
The Project will have
ongoing training for mentors to reflect progress, discuss the mentoring
experience and address any issues and concerns. Additionally, the mentors/mentees
will participate in local community service projects and recruit local
community volunteers, including other foster youth, to participate in
community service projects. At the conclusion of the mentor's commitment,
the mentor is eligible to receive an educational award of $1,250.
