All Santa Ana College
students are invited to investigate the Tutorial Learning Center, where
FREE tutoring is offered in a variety of subject areas. At the Center,
where many part-time tutors are employed, the primary goal is
to help students improve their classroom performance.
Tutors offer help in a
variety of ways. Among other things, they explain difficult concepts or
information in a course; go over methods for studying a course; give
suggestions on how to study the text; review the course outline and
objectives of a course; and point out major topics and concepts in the
course which are important in understanding the subject. Tutoring
sessions at Santa Ana College may be conducted in either a one-to-one or
group setting. Exam reviews are held prior to major tests in some
subjects.
Whether a student needs
minor clarification - or major assistance - the Center is a
user-friendly place to visit. Some might be surprised to
learn that the majority of students who use the Center are in very good
academic standing. During the Fall, 2007 semester, 31% of
those tutored in the Center had a cumulative grade point average of over
3.0. Fifty-seven percent (57%) had
cumulative grade point averages above 2.5.
Faculty support of the
tutoring program is very strong. Many professors encourage their students
to utilize the Center’s services. In fact, all tutors are referred by SAC
faculty (or approved by SAC faculty) prior to their being hired.
Likewise, tutors who do not hold a bachelor’s degree or higher complete a
tutor training course before working with students.
The Center offers
students the opportunity to explore topics more completely, have their
individual questions answered more thoroughly, and provides an environment
where practice and review are encouraged. Again, there is no charge for
tutoring, as long as students are enrolled through RSCCD in the course(s)
for which tutoring is sought.
Appointments are required
and can be scheduled by visiting the Center, which is located in U-103, or
by calling (714) 564-6260.
Tutors are available in a
variety of subject areas, including:
- Accounting
- Biology
- Chemistry
- English/ESL
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Political Science
- Many other subjects
