Library Guide for Wireless Laptops

The Nealley Library of Santa Ana College has made 38 laptops available for use by SAC students with active ID cards. These Dell laptops are equipped with wireless networking cards and have Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and Internet Explorer. The Microsoft Office applications and wireless access to the Internet can be used anywhere in the library. Wireless laptops are available for circulation at the Periodicals Desk of the Library.

Library Laptop Student Agreement

  • Laptops are for academic use only.  Violations of SAC Library Computer and Internet Use Policy will result in your loss of laptop check-out privileges for the rest of the semester.

  • Laptops cannot be taken outside the Library.

  • The laptop must not be left unattended. You are solely responsible for the laptop while it is checked out to you.

  • Laptops are checked out for two hours, and can be renewed for another hour if no one is waiting. All laptops must be returned 1/2 hour before closing time.

  • There will be no laptops checked out one hour prior to the stated time of library closing.

  • Late charges are $1.00 per minute.

  • Report any damage or malfunction to the Periodicals Desk immediately.

  • Library staff will inspect the unit in your presence when it is returned. Any tampering of the unit or parts of the unit will result in immediate referral for disciplinary action.

Signing the Student Laptop Use Agreement form indicates  you are in full knowledge and agreement of all the provisions stated above.

Saving Your Work

Save your work often! The battery should last for the two-hour loan period, but intensive CPU and hard drive activities will deplete the battery more quickly.

  • Save your document to your 3.5" floppy disk, not the laptop hard drive. When you power off the laptop, all the files on it are erased. It is essential that you save your work to the A: drive.
  • Follow the instructions for saving in whatever application you are using. For most applications, simply click File and Save As.
  • When the Save As dialog box appears, specify the drive by naming the file: a:yourfilename

Printing Your Work

Printing is available from the laptop. Students can send print jobs to the Pay-to- Print stations located by the Reference Desk.

Safety Issues:

  • The Library has a limited number of electrical outlets for laptop use. Library users are asked to limit laptop use to locations that will not create a safety hazard. If it is necessary to plug a power adapter into a wall outlet, only use the seats identified with "Outlet Available".
  • There are wall outlets adjacent to the study carrels facing the South Parking Lot.  They are also identified with the "Outlet Available" signs.
Proper Handling
  • Do not carry the laptop while it is still powered ON.

  • Do not touch the LCD screen.

Shut Down the Computer

  • Turn off the laptop by pressing the power button once.
