Student Learning Outcomes 

  • Engage in supervised fieldwork to test the theory taught in library technology prerequisite courses.

  • Complete two sixty hour supervised internships to the satisfaction of the sponsoring library and the instructor.

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of varying levels of employees in different library settings.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of library services and practices as performed by the library paraprofessional in a variety of library settings.

  • Compare and contrast the mission, characteristics and services of the two assigned library internship sites.

  • Search, evaluate, and utilize professional articles retrieved from electronic periodical databases to complete course assignments.

  • Review and explain the ethics of the profession.

  • Recognize the importance of networking and becoming active members of professional associations.

  • Recognize the importance of continuing education for professional development.

  • Develop job searching skills.

  • Analyze library job descriptions/flyers.

  • Draft cover letter and resume.

  • Prepare for and participate in mock library paraprofessional vacancy interview session.

Student Learning Outcomes 

  • Explain the public services philosophy and function of libraries and their relationship to the clientele they serve.

  • Understand the Library Technician’s role in public service functions.

  • Distinguish between the functions of Reference and Circulation

  • Demonstrate the role of positive customer service skills in a library setting with regards to Circulation and Reference.

  • Demonstrate familiarity with the theory, practice and principles of a successful reference interview.

  • Differentiate between library procedures and policy.

  • Examine the importance of established library procedures and policies when providing services to library patrons/clientele.

  • Examine, evaluate compare and successfully use paper and electronic resources in order to determine their value to patrons and to a particular library collection.

  • Develop a knowledge of various types of reference sources.

  • Analyze reference sources to determine scope, arrangement and use in specific situations.

  • Recognize standards for evaluating reference sources.

  • Develop strategies for selecting the best tools for a patron’s needs.

  • Identify and select appropriate core reference sources for a particular library setting. (Bibliography/Pathfinder)

  • Know and apply the theory, practice and principles of a successful reference interview.

  • Distinguish the differences between directional, ready reference and more in depth reference questions.

  • Conduct reference interviews successfully by listening to a patron’s request, clarifying the question and analyzing the question to best determine the patron’s need.

  • Create a library Reference Desk or Circulation Desk scenario involving a patron and a Library Technician assisting the patron at the service desk. Describe the situation , and the steps involved in assisting the patron in their quest for service.

  • Conduct and describe a logical, efficient search in a precise, timely and accurate manner (Reference or Circulation).

  • Answer ready reference questions involving the use of almanacs, dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories, handbooks, subject specific reference sources, indexes, databases and the Internet.

  • Search and successfully use the Internet effectively in providing Reference Desk assistance.

  • Respond to questions in any library public services area in an ethical and professional manner

  • Know basic steps of selecting library materials

  • Describe basic elements in the library contract with a vendor

  • Recognize the vendor (wholesaler, publisher, or retailer) to order library materials

  • Create a PO (Purchase Order)

  • Perform receiving of in-coming materials and matching quantity in the order with the invoice

  • Identify and claim missing and damaged copies

  • Apply ways of payment

  • Perform account tracking and balance

  • Describe major elements in descriptive cataloging for print materials

  • Identify access points including main entry and added entries

  • Identify and verify controlled vocabulary in bibliographic records

  • Analyze the content of library materials

  • Construct subject headings using Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)

  • Demonstrate competency in the structure of indexing terms and related references

  • Identify the basic principles of major classification system including the Library of Congress Classification System and the Dewey Decimal Classification System

  • Demonstrate competency in constructing classification numbers using Library of Congress Classification

  • Identify the basic elements in a MARC (Machine Readable Cataloging) record

  • Create basic MARC records using the cataloging module of an automated library system

  • Formulate database search strategies

  • Search an online bibliographic utility (OCLC)

  • Apply methods and procedures for copy cataloging

  • Recognize materials that need to be mended and repaired

  • Know Interlibrary loans procedures

  • Perform database clear-up after weeding

  • Distinguish the differences of handling serials and print materials
