Free six week summer
preparatory program. Seven medical and dental schools participate.
Stanford University Summer Premedical Student Program
20 underrepresented students
are selected. The program provides a background in cellular
biology, human anatomy, basic research skills, and experiences in
clinical medicine. Students participate in seminars on minority health
care issues, test-taking skills and MCAT preparation, and effective
writing and research skills.

Aquarist Intern:
(on beautiful Santa Catalina Island in California)
The aquarist intern will aid the marine science director in daily
aquarium operations including tank maintenance, feeding, health
monitoring of organisms, and daily checks. Assist in specimen collecting,
exhibit design, life support system management, curriculum development,
and teaching of summer programs to scout groups. Especially
relevant for those interested in becoming an aquarist, animal husbandry
or marine science education.

Five fabulous internship opportunities with the Office of Science,
exclusively for community college students. The summer internships
are for 10 weeks. Students produce an abstract and publish their work in
a scholarly journal. The interns receive $400/week and travel up to
$500 is covered. The internships are in these fields:

At Sea Internships:
A PAID summer internship at-sea. Assist marine technicians and science
parties aboard cutting edge scientific research vessels. The MATE Center will provide the travel
costs for interns to participate on research cruises throughout the
country and the world. Learn how to operate and maintain a variety of
scientific and navigational equipment, and run a scientific research
cruise. MATE’s at-sea internships opportunities
have ranged from onboard chemistry projects, biological surveys,
GIS/bathymetric surveys (seafloor mapping), geological studies, work with
ROVs, AUVs, manned
submersibles, and much more! Room, board and a $250/week stipend will be
provided to each intern. Interns will gain transferable skills that
can be used in any position; intrapersonal (people), computer, team work,
technology, marine research techniques, marine electronics and
communication skills.
