 Freshman Experience Program Advantages

1. Academic Success

In a small class of new students, you will interact with dedicated instructors who will provide you the personal attention you deserve as a first-year student at Santa Ana College.  As a new student, you will be presented new and different academic challenges.  The Freshman Experience Program is designed to offer you valuable tips on how to study, take notes, manage your time, take exams, and understand yourself as a lifelong learner and provide you with many opportunities to refine these developing skills.

Since its beginning, The Freshman Experience Program at this college and other similar programs at other colleges has been studied to measure its effect on first-year college students.  These studies suggest that students who participate in this type of program tend to graduate and exceed their predicted GPA's at higher levels compared to a similar group of students who do not participate.

2. Personal Development

On the Santa Ana College campus, you will encounter a great diversity of people, ideas, and values.  The "Freshman Experience Program" will encourage you to appreciate and respect this diversity, give you the opportunity to express your viewpoints as well as listen to others, and support the values of our growing community of learners.  We realize that you are making a major life adjustment by coming to college and we support you in this goal!

The program provides critical-thinking and decision-making tools essential to deal effectively with the many personal challenges you will face involving personal freedom and responsibility as a first year college student.  Clarifying your values, learning to respect differences, and developing an ethical sense of responsibility are key goals in "The Freshman Experience" program.

3. Technology

All students will have access to computer technology.  As a "Freshman Experience" program  student, you'll learn how to use this technology to communicate with friends and professors.  We'll show you how to "surf the net" in order to research a term paper or simply access other internet resources.  Opportunities are provided to become familiar with our online catalog and databases for locating research  materials.  By requiring e-mail use, word processing proficiency, and library research,  "The Freshman Experience" program will help you maximize the academic experience here at SAC.

4. Campus Involvement

One of the goals of "The Freshman Experience" program is to  help you participate in campus activities at Santa Ana College.  There are a variety of opportunities to get involved on campus. You will be introduce you to many clubs and organizations, community service and leadership programs, cultural events, campus activities, and more!  Research has determined that students who get involved perform better academically.  Your "Freshmen Experience" program instructors and peer leaders will show you how to network and make  connections to ensure your success at SAC.

5. Campus Resources

"The Freshman Experience" program introduces the new student to student  support services and campus resources that can help you solve problems!  Students are provided with information regarding registration, library services, health center, student activities, sports and other supportive services available on campus.

6. Educational and Occupational Goals

Whether you've already chosen a career path or are uncertain where you're headed, the program provides exposure to a wide range of majors and careers to help you discover and define your interests and abilities.  "The Freshman Experience" program is designed to give you positive direction toward your future!
