Currency:
Vietnam's
currency is the New Dông (D). Notes are in denominations of
D50,000, 20,000, 10,000, 5000, 2000, 1000, 500, 200 and 100.
Coins are not used.
Currency
exchange: The US Dollar is the most favored foreign currency.
British, Australian, Japanese, French, German, Belgian, Dutch, Singaporean
and Thai currency can usually be changed in the larger cities; great difficulty
may be encountered in trying to exchange any other currencies. There
is a charge for changing money in banks.
Credit
cards: An increasing number of outlets accept Visa and MasterCard.
Check with your credit card company for details for merchant acceptability
and other services which may be available.
travelers
checks: These are widely accepted in hotels and banks.
To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travelers are advised to take
travelers checks in U.S. Dollars.
Currency
restrictions: Import and export of local currency is prohibited.
Import and export
of foreign
currency over US$3000 is subject to declaration. Proof of all expenses
should be kept.
Tipping:
Officially
prohibited but widely practiced, especially in the south. Discretion
is advised.
Banking
Hours: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday
and 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m. Saturday.
