FORECAST
Climate
Three
basic climate types are found in Vietnam and four distinct seasons are
evident, particularly in the northern provinces.
In the
north, especially in the interior, the temperatures are subtropical; shifting
seasonal wind patterns result in dry winters and wet summers. The
central and southeastern areas typify the tropical monsoon climate, with
high temperatures and abundant precipitation. In the southwest, distinct
wet and dry periods are evident, but temperatures are higher than in the
north. Because of its geography the climate in Vietnam varies greatly
from north to south. Tropical monsoons occur from May to October.
It is almost totally dry throughout the rest of the year.
There
are no good or bad seasons to visit Vietnam. When one region is wet
or cold, or steamy hot, there is always somewhere else that is sunny and
warm.
Basically,
the south has two seasons: the wet (May to November, wettest from
June to August) and the dry (December to April). The hottest and
most humid time is from the end of February to May. The central coast
is dry from June to October.
The north
has two seasons: cool, damp winters (November to April) and hot summers
(May to October). The highland areas are significantly cooler than
the lowlands, and temperatures can get down to freezing in winter.
There is the possibility of typhoons between July and November, affecting
the north and central areas.
Vietnam
is located in both a tropical and a temperate zone. It is characterized
by strong monsoon influences, but has a considerable amount of sun, a high
rate of rainfall, and high humidity. Regions located near the tropics
and in the mountainous regions are endowed with a temperate climate.
The annual
average temperature ranges from 22ºC to 27ºC. In Hanoi,
the average temperature is 23ºC, in Ho Chi Minh City it is 26ºC,
and in Hue it is 25ºC. There are two distinguishable seasons.
The cold season occurs from November to April and the hot season from May
to October. The difference in temperature between the two seasons
in southern Vietnam is almost unnoticeable, averaging 3ºC. The
most noticeable variations are found in the northern provinces where differences
of 12ºC have been observed.
