Holidays

The most important holiday in Vietnam is Tet, the Lunar New Year.  It is officially celebrated for four days, but business generally slows down for one week before and one week after the celebration.  Travel (including international travel) becomes very difficult, hotels are full and many services close down for at least a week and at times a lot longer.

Some of the major religious festivals follow a lunar calendar.  They include:

Late Jan-early Feb:  Tet the most important festival of the year, marking the new lunar year as well as the advent of spring.

August:  Wandering Souls Day, the second-largest festival of the year, when offerings of food and gifts are given to the wandering souls of the forgotten dead.

June:  Doan Ngu, when human effigies are burnt, becoming soldiers in the god of death's army.

April:  Holiday of the Dead, which commemorates deceased relatives.

At full moon there are held special prayers at Vietnamese and Chinese pagodas.  Many Buddhists eat only vegetarian food on these days.
