Over three-quarters
of U.S. citizens belong to a religious group: Protestant (56%), Roman
Catholic (28%), Jewish (2%), other 4%, none 10% (1989). While there
is no state church, over three-quarters of U.S. citizens belong to a religious
group and 95% of the population has some religious belief. 80-85
percent are Christians; Judaism and Islam each account for about 2-3 percent
of the population. The U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights,
two of the basis for U.S. society are based on Christian values and principles.
The Constitution does however dictate that there is a separation between
the church and the state. There are scores of Christian churches
throughout the country. Over one quarter of the population is Roman
Catholic; Baptists, Methodists and Lutherans are the largest protestant
groups.
