Dress

Fashion

The appropriate clothing for business varies widely.  Proper dress depends on the region of the country, a person's company, his or her position within it and the industry in which he or she works.  Begin with professional attire and manner until you have observed what others wear.

Suits are still standard dress for men, however casual dressing is becoming more popular in the workplace, especially on Fridays.  In cities, conservative business attire is best; in rural areas and small towns, clothing is less formal and less fashionable.  Socks should match your suit; no leg should show between pant hem and shoe.  Hats are not worn indoors.

Women do not over dress for daytime or wear flashy or noisy jewelry.  American women do not wear a lot of makeup to the office.  Low-cut blouses, short skirts and tight clothing are not appropriate office attire.

If you wish to wear traditional clothing from your country, feel free to do so.

Americans usually feel free to wear whatever they please; however appearance as a whole is important to the individual American.  Cleanliness is emphasized but casual attire is often worn.
