Taiwan is the second most densely populated area in the world, with an average of 606 persons per square kilometer.  Taipei is Taiwan's most populous city (2.64 million), followed by Kaohsiung (1.46 million).  (Ministry of Interior, 1999)

Ethnic groups are primarily Taiwanese (including Hakka) 84% and mainland Chinese 14%, with a few aboriginal inhabitants 2%.  Although they live together amicably, there is some tension among the groups.

The more than 18 million "native" Taiwanese are descendants of Chinese who migrated from
Fujian and Guangdong Provinces on the mainland, primarily in the 18th and 19th centuries.  The "mainlanders," who arrived on Taiwan after 1945, came from all parts of mainland China.  About 370,000 aborigines inhabit the mountainous central and eastern parts of the island and are believed to be of Malayo-Polynesian origin.  The aborigines comprise nine major tribes:  the Ami, the Atayal, the Paiwan, the Bunun, the Puyuma, the Rukai, the Tsou, the Saisiyat, and the Yami (Ministry of Interior).
