Currency
Taiwan's
currency is the New Taiwan Dollar (NT$) which equals 100 cents. Notes
are in denominations of NT$1000, 500, 100 and 50. Coins are in denominations
of NT$50, 10, 5 and 1.
Currency
Exchange
All travelers
are required to make a currency declaration in writing together with the
baggage declaration. Unused currency can be reconverted on departure,on
production of exchange receipts.
Credit
Cards and ATM
Credit
cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants and shops. ATMs are
readily available.
Travelers
Checks
Accepted
in most hotels, restaurants and shops. To avoid additional exchange
rate charges, travelers are advised to take travelers checks in U.S. Dollars.
Tipping
Tipping
is not necessary in most cases. A ten percent service charge is usually
added to restaurant and hotel bills; however, it is common to leave the
change when a bill is paid. Porters at hotels and airports customarily
receive tips for their services. NTS50-NTS100 per item of luggage
is appropriate. Taxis are not tipped uless assistance with luggage
is provided, leaving small change with a driver is common.

Free import
of foreign currency is allowed, subject to declaration. The import
and export of local currency is limited to NT$40,000. The export
of foreign currency is limited to the equivalent of US$5000 or up to the
amount imported and declared. All exchange receipts must be retained.
