Religion
African
traditional religions are widespread as is Christianity, which was spread
by missionary groups in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Islam
is particularly well established along the coast; the Kenyans of Asian
origin are predominantly Hindus. Religions represented in Kenya include
Roman Catholicism (28 percent), Protestantism (including Anglican; 38 percent
all denominations), indigenous beliefs (26 percent), and Muslim (7 percent),
other 1%.
The Constitution
of Kenya guarantees freedom of worship and there are hundreds of religious
denominations and sects in the country. The followers of Christian
faith are the majority. Islam is the main religion for most of the
communities along the coast and the Somali community. The Asian community
is mainly Hindu. Some Kenyans observe traditional methods of worship.
Most Kenyans
outside the coastal and eastern provinces are Christians of one sort or
another, while most of those on the coast and in the eastern part of the
country are Muslim. Muslims make up some 30% of the population.
In the more remote tribal areas you'll find a mixture of
Muslims,
Christians and those who follow their ancestral tribal beliefs.
