CLIMATE
Fashion
The temperature
is hot during the day in the high season and can be cold during the night.
There are two rain seasons during the year from March until the end of
May and November through out December.
There
is plenty of sunshine all the year round and summer clothes are worn throughout
the year. However, it is usually cool at night and early in the morning.
Lightweight cottons and linens with rainwear are advised for the coast
and lakeside. Warmer clothing is needed in June and July and for
the cooler mornings on the coast. Light weight clothing is needed
for much of the year in the highlands. Rainwear is advisable between
March and June and October and December.
Business
Dress
Standards
of appropriate business attire in the larger towns are comparable to those
in most cities. In the coastal areas, tropical-weight clothing is
appropriate throughout the year; in the highlands, wool suits may be more
comfortable. Sweaters and light raincoats are needed during the rainy
seasons (April to June and October to November); a topcoat is rarely worn.
Shorts are only appropriate in resort areas.
On
the Airplane
On airplanes
consideration is between what is comfortable and what looks good.
It might be the most comfortable thing in the world to wear just some old
ripped t-shirt and sweat pants but also realize that you generally get
treated the according to the way you look. While a coat and tie might not
be the most relaxing you do get a bit more respect and the chance to be
upgraded (they are looking for people who are dressed nicely). The
tie can be loosened and the coat removed in the plane and leaving just
the slacks and shirt.
Casual
Dress
The best
clothes are the most versatile. Collared shirts are the best; they
protect the neck from the sun, look better overall and can be worn into
"nicer" areas.
It is
recommended that women wear long skirts; it helps in blending in culturally
as well as it does not bring as much attention.
Dark greens,
khakis and less bright colors are good choices. White might be the
coolest color but it is the first to get dirty. Do not wear camouflage
as it is only to be worn by the Kenya military.
Resist
the "safari" gear look; t-shirts are too light and are often considered
too casual.
