Calculator

TI-83+ or TI-84+ (Silver Edition preferred).  Calculators with CAS, such as TI-89 or TI-92, are not allowed.

Exams:  There will be four quizzes, four tests and a final examination.  THERE WILL BE VIRTUALLY NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES OR TESTSMAKE-UPS WILL BE GIVEN ONLY IN THE CASE OF A VERIFIABLE EMERGENCY, WITH PROPER DOCUMENTATION, AND ONLY IF I AM NOTIFIED ON OR BEFORE THE DAY OF THE TEST.  The final exam will be comprehensive.

Homework:  Homework will be assigned at nearly every class meeting, and should be completed before the following class meeting.  DEDICATING YOURSELF TO DOING A THOROUGH AND RESPONSIBLE JOB ON THE HOMEWORK IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT COMMITMENT THAT YOU CAN MAKE TO ENSURE YOUR SUCCESS IN THIS COURSE.  Each assignment collected is worth a possible 10 points.  Assignments which are turned in late will be worth a possible 5 points.  Late homework will be accepted only up to the day of the test covering that particular homework section.  Please write clearly and show all your work.  The problem statements must be written down (you may paraphrase word problems).  Points may be deducted for excessively messy work.  Do not use paper torn from wire-bound notebooks, as points will be deducted if you do.  DO NOT COPY SOLUTIONS FROM THE SOLUTIONS MANUAL.  IF IT IS APPARENT THAT ONE OR MORE PROBLEMS IS COPIED, YOU MAY RECEIVE A ZERO FOR THE ENTIRE ASSIGNMENT.  There are many resources available to you if you need help with the homework.

Attendance:  Attendance will be taken.  You are expected to attend all class meetings.  If you miss a class meeting, you should notify me by phone or e-mail.  It is your responsibility to officially withdraw from a course if you stop attending.  You may or may not be dropped by the instructor for excessive absences.  I will likely drop you from the course if you miss four class meetings or one test.  The last day to drop the course with a grade of “W” is Sunday, November 14th.

Grading:  There are 1000 points possible for the course, distributed as follows:

Homework:  (avg. score)·10 = 100 points

Four quizzes:  (12.5 each)·4 = 50 points

Four tests:  (150 each)·4 = 600 points

          Final examination:  250 points

900-1000 = A,  800-899 = B,  700-799 = C,  600-699 = D,  0-599 = F

I reserve the right to assign a student a grade higher than what a point total calls for if the student demonstrates adequate improvement and understanding.

Cheating:  Academic dishonesty or cheating is defined as an intentional act of fraud in which a student seeks to claim credit for the work or efforts of another without authorization. This includes assisting other students in acts of dishonesty or coercing students into acts of dishonesty, whether it is in coursework or on exams. There is no tolerance for academic dishonesty in this class. Any student caught in acts of dishonesty or assisting another student in acts of dishonesty will receive a zero on the assignment or test.  An “Academic Misconduct Incident Report” may also be filed with the Dean of Science, Math, and Health Sciences and the Dean of Students.  It is your responsibility to make sure that no one is copying your work.

Resources:  There is free tutoring available in the Math Center (L-204) and in the Tutorial Learning Center (U-202).  I strongly encourage students to utilize these resources and to work together outside of class.  Please come see me outside of class if you have any questions regarding the material or the course in general.  You do not need an appointment to see me during my office hours.

A student with a disability, who would like to request an academic accommodation, is responsible for identifying herself/himself to the instructor and to the Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS). To make arrangements for academic accommodations, contact the Physical Disability Center in Johnson Center, U-103, or phone (714) 564-6264, TTY (714) 564-6284 for a referral to the appropriate DSPS Department.
