Lab Safety Instructions

The following safety instructions have been adopted for the Pharmacy Technology lab courses.

EMERGENCY INFORMATION
Students are responsible for updating the EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION that they have supplied on the yellow Program Guidelines form.  Since you submitted this form at the beginning of the program, please verify that the information is still correct.

FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS
Students are expected to listen to and follow all directions given by the instructor and lab assistant.

QUESTIONS
When students are unclear about a new procedure, they must ask the instructor or lab assistant for additional directions.

MEDICAL ENGLISH
All
communications in the classroom will be done in English, using medical terms as appropriate.  Students who communicate in another language will be asked to leave the classroom.  Lab work missed for this reason cannot be made up.

PROPER ATTIRE
Students are expected to wear their lab jackets and name tags during class time.  Students are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes; sandals and thongs do not provide adequate foot protection.

RL-3
Students are to READ the LABEL THREE TIMES (RL3) to assure that the correct drug product is being used.

STEP STOOL
A step stool is available for students who need to use it to reach supplies and equipment on high shelves.  Students may not climb on chairs to reach items.

PERSONAL PROTECTION
Students are to wash (fingertips to elbows) before and after compounding, packaging, and aseptic technique procedures.

Students are responsible for using appropriate protective apparel (gloves, gowns, masks, goggles) when handling drug substances that cause allergy or toxicity.

INJURIES
Students will immediately report all injuries sustained during class time to the instructor or lab assistant.

EYEWASH
An eyewash is available in the classroom.  Use it in case of splash contamination of your eyes.  Be sure to notify your instructor or the lab assistant if you have used the eyewash.

SPILLS
Students are to wipe up simple spills immediately.
If the spill contains active drug, students are to notify the staff and to thoroughly rinse the area to remove all drug residue.

LAB CLEAN UP
Students are expected to leave the classroom in a clean and orderly manner.
Lab points will be deducted if lab supplies and equipment are not cleaned and returned to their proper location.  At the end of lab, students are to wash and dry the counters or tabletops where they have been working.

NEEDLES AND SYRINGES
Needles must be kept capped when not in use.
Be sure to securely attach the cap before carrying the needle away from your “hood” for any reason.

Needles and syringes are to be disposed of in the red SHARPS containers.  It is not necessary to separate the needle from the syringe before disposal.  Do not clip the needles.  Be sure to push in the syringe plunger to save space in the container.  Make sure the colored needle guard (cap) is securely attached before disposing of the needle and syringe.

AMPULS
Ampuls are to be broken away from yourself and not toward others.

GLASS DISPOSAL
All broken glass, including ampuls, must be disposed of in the broken glass
container.

CLASSROOM SUPPLIES
All medications, needles, and syringes must remain in the classroom at all times.  It is against the law to remove any medications, needles, or syringes from the classroom.

Instructors may issue additional safety instructions as needed.
