Process for placement on the Nursing Entry List for 1st semester:
►New
applications are not being accepted for the first semester entry list as of
June 2009, due to a transition in the admission process. The exception to
this date is for St. Joseph Hospital employees.
► Applications
from all prospective students for first semester will be accepted again after the current entry list
is exhausted. As of September 30, 2011, there are over 540 students awaiting
entry.

Please check this website for any updates in the
admission process.
-
The new admission process, once started, will use a combination of points and random selection to determine entry into the Nursing Program. Science prerequisites' (anatomy,
physiology, and microbiology) grade point average, related course grade
point average, general education course completion, previous degrees,
related work, life experiences, proficiency in specific languages (as
selected by the California Community College Chancellor's Office), and TEAS
Test results will be assigned points.

Click
here for the admission criteria. This criteria will be put in place
once the current list nears depletion. This is expected in Spring of
2014. As this date approaches updates will occur.
The following information remains in place
for historical purposes:
1- You must become a student at SAC or SCC by completing a
college application and obtaining a Student ID Number (call Admissions and
Records at 714/564-6005 for college application questions).
2- Students must attend a Nursing Information Orientation given by the
Counseling Department, which can be reached at 714/564-6100.
3- Eligibility for placement on the Nursing Entry List is
based upon completion of prerequisite classes. The prerequisites are:
Anatomy (Biology 239)
Human Physiology (Biology 249)
Health Microbiology (Biology 139) OR General Microbiology (Biology 229)
Freshman Composition (English 101/101H)
»
Science Courses must have been completed within five (5)
years prior to the student being added to the entry list.
» If you have completed any courses at another college, you
must submit official transcripts to Admissions and Records. Official high
school transcripts must also be submitted to Admissions and Records.
►For
those students currently on the entry list, the completed prerequisites
require a grade of "C" or higher.
►For
any completed prerequisite prior to Fall 2010, a grade of "C" or higher is
acceptable.
►Effective
Fall 2010, the completed prerequisites require a grade of "C" or higher with
an overall prerequisite Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher.
4- Once the prerequisites have been completed, a Nursing
Prerequisite Verification form (Nursing Application) can be picked up from Room
R-213, located on the second floor of Russell Hall. This form can also be
downloaded from the home page of the nursing site (click "Nursing/Health
Sciences" on the top of the list of links to the left). Complete the
application and return it to R-213.
» Due to many students completing their prerequisites at
other colleges, the verification process can be prolonged. You will be
notified by letter after you have been placed on the Entry List.
» All students who have had their prerequisites verified are
placed on our 1st semester entry list in the order in which the prerequisite
verification forms were received.
» Once a student is placed on the list, if there is any change
in address, name, and/or phone number, the student must notify the Nursing
Office in writing. If we are unable to contact you by phone and/or mail,
your name will be removed from the Entry List. Additionally, it is the student’s responsibility to
notify the college of those same changes.
Current program information, as of February 28, 2011:
1- The Program is four semesters in length and begins with
RN 101/101L. Successful completion of the Program will result in an
Associate Degree of Nursing (ADN) as well as being eligible to take the
nursing licensing exam (NCLEX-RN). The Santa Ana College Nursing Program is
approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing and accredited by the National
League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.
2- The Traditional Program admits students twice each year.
Theory courses meet 2 times per week. Clinical courses are 8 or 12 hours for
1 or 2 days per week. Clinical days are usually Mondays and/or Tuesdays;
however, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays may also be utilized. The
semesters are 16 weeks.
3- The Extended Campus Program (ECP) admits students once
each year. Theory courses meet 1 day per week in the evening except during fourth semester
when they meet twice per week in the evening. Clinical courses are
12 hours on every Saturday or every other Saturday and Sunday. The semesters
are 16 to 21 weeks, depending on the semester (1st and 3rd semesters are 21
weeks; 2nd semester is 19 weeks; 4th semester is 16 weeks). The 1st and 3rd
semesters begin in July and end in December; the 2nd and 4th semesters begin
in February and end in June. ECP theory courses and Skills and Computer Labs
are housed at the St. Joseph Hospital of Orange.
4- Community-based nursing clinical days for both the
Traditional and ECP programs are arranged on days other than
regular clinical days.
5- All students entering the first semester at a community
college must pass a state-regulated diagnostic assessment test. Santa
Ana College utilizes the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS test). It
tests math, English, reading and science. All students are encouraged to log
onto www.atitesting.com for study
material and other useful resources and information.
When you have been notified that a space is available for
you to enter the program, you will be required to pass Version V of the TEAS test if you
have not already done so. Information about preparation courses for each
subject will be provided at the same time as your notification. If you have
already passed the test, you must have ATI provide an official copy of your
score. If you do not pass the TEAS test on your first attempt, you must
contact Counseling for remediation, complete the remediation, and re-take
the test. If you do not pass the re-take, your name will be removed from the
entry list and you will have to re-apply.
How students are chosen from the list:
For each Fall (Summer for ECP) class, students are chosen:
a- First-come, first-serve for half of the admitting class (minus half of an ECP group).
b- Priority ranking system of grades in prerequisite classes for half of the
admitting class (minus half of an ECP group).
A= 10 points
B= 5 points
C= 1 point.
c- St. Joseph Employees for one clinical group in the ECP program.
**To qualify as a St. Joseph employee, you must be a full- or part-time employee for six
months or
more and you must attach a copy of your St. Joseph or Heritage
Central employee badge and a
letter of verification of current employment and employment for the past 6
months from human resources to your application that you submit to the Nursing Office.
No other facility employment
qualifies as a “St. Joseph employee.”
For each Spring class, students are chosen:
a- First-come, first-serve for half of the admitting class.
b- Priority ranking system of grades in prerequisite classes for half of the
admitting class.
A= 10 points
B= 5 points
C= 1 point.
Important things to consider for entry into the program:
A- Students have only ONE chance to deny entrance into the
program and remain where they currently are on the list. A second denial
will result in the student being placed at the bottom of the list. A third
denial will result in the student being removed from the list and needing to reapply.
B- STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE TRANSPORTATION TO AND
FROM OFF-CAMPUS CLINICAL SITES.
C- **Please note**: This is considered a full-time program.
Students are advised to limit outside employment. Excessive work schedules
combined with family and school commitments may contribute to being
unsuccessful in the program.
D- Students who are currently on the Entry List and are
about 2-3 (+) semesters away from entering the program will be notified by the
Nursing Office when to take Pharmacology (RN 103) and Nursing Concepts (RN
112). These classes must be completed by the end of the First Semester of
the Nursing Program (RN 101/101L). Seats in these two classes are very
limited and therefore are reserved for students who will soon be entering or are
already currently in our First Semester. **THE NURSING OFFICE WILL SEND
LETTERS TO STUDENTS WHO ARE ELIGIBLE TO TAKE THESE CLASSES.
