Santa Ana College: Degrees and Certificates for 2006-2007

Teaching

Approximately 50 colleges and universities in California provide teacher credential programs. These programs are entered after the completion of a BA degree.

Students planning to teach in the elementary and secondary schools may begin preparation at Rancho Santiago Community College District. The college offers programs of study which fulfill lower division requirements for most majors currently acceptable for teacher credential programs.

Completion of the general education courses as outlined in the catalog for transfer to CSU or UC system is recommended for all students planning to transfer to a four-year institution. Counseling 114 (same as Human Development 114) has been designed to give more detailed information about the credential process.

Suggested Elementary Teaching Emphasis:

Liberal Studies and Child Development are the two most common University majors of students who are planning to enter Teacher Education programs for an elementary teaching credential.

At Rancho Santiago Community College District these relevant majors are described under Liberal Arts and the Human Development School-Age Option.

Suggested Secondary Teaching Emphasis:

Teaching at the secondary level most often requires a single subject credential. Students major in the subject they plan to teach. Review of the Rancho Santiago Community College District catalog will provide information about the relevant majors.
