Santa Ana College: Degrees and Certificates for 2006-2007
Liberal Arts Degree
The associate degree curriculum in liberal arts allows
students to develop an appreciation and understanding of the beauty and values
that have shaped and enriched our culture. The program will enable students to
develop intellectual maturity, a deeper understanding of themselves and the
American heritage. The curriculum provides a basic framework for lifelong
individual study. Completion of the University Transfer Studies option prepares
students to move into the curriculum at many four-year institutions, leading to
a baccalaureate degree.
Option I (SAC 0314)
Major requirements for the associate in arts degree, Liberal Arts:
At least twenty units selected from a minimum of three of the
following fields: ethnic studies, fine and performing arts, humanities, language
arts, science, social science, physics, mathematics, and interdisciplinary
studies.
Units used to satisfy the Rancho Santiago Community College
District general education requirements may be used to satisfy requirements for
the liberal arts major.
Option II (SAC 1520)
Major requirements for the associate in arts degree, University Transfer Studies:
Complete one of the following:
(a) Full certification of the CSU
General Education Breadth Requirements ("Plan B") (thirty-nine
units);
OR
(b) Full certification
of the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum, (IGETC, "Plan
C") CSU version/UC version/or both versions (thirty-four to forty-four
units)
In addition, complete sixteen to twenty-six units of CSU
transferable (numbered 100 level and above) courses. The number of units will
depend upon the number of units completed in (a) or (b) above: however a
minimum of sixty CSU transferable units are required to complete the degree.
Note: Although the awarding of this degree option recognizes
the completion of lower division general education requirements for UC and/or
CSU, it does not necessarily guarantee admission to a four-year institution.
For example, students may need to meet a higher G.P.A. for admission than that
required for the A.A. degree. Students should also strongly consider their
transfer major course requirements when selecting this degree. In addition, for
some transfer majors completion of CSU GE-Breadth or IGETC is not advisable.
Consult a SAC or SCC counselor for additional information about transfer
requirements.
| By
meeting the above requirements, students may receive an Associate in Arts
degree in University Transfer Studies or an Associate in Arts degree in Liberal
Arts, but not both. |
