Dance Degree and Certificate

Degree Program A-Dance (SAC 0346)

The associate degree program in dance provides training in four areas of technique: ballet, modern, and jazz. Integral parts of the curriculum are practical experience in concert performance and production work as well as a theoretical background in choreography and dance history. The dance program is designed for both the student who wishes to major in dance and the student seeking an acquaintance with the practice and theory of dance. Completion of the associate in arts degree prepares the student to enter a four-year institution leading to a baccalaureate degree. The dance program provides training for careers and employment in the performing arts, education, choreography, movement therapy, studio and arts management, arts consultancy, dance criticism, fitness, and related fields.

Degree Program B-Dance/Musical Theatre (SAC 0347)

The associate in arts degree in dance with a musical theatre option combines fundamental dance courses with theatre arts and music courses to provide training for students in acting, voice, and dance. This program is designed to develop skills desirable for musical theatre performance and to prepare students for auditions in the performing arts industry. Completion of the associate in arts degree in dance with the musical theatre option prepares the student to enter a four-year institution leading to a baccalaureate degree. Employment opportunities exist in television, semiprofessional and professional theatres, touring shows, private instruction, choreography, and dance-related fields.

Dance Certificate (SAC 1099)

The certificate program in dance combines comprehensive advanced courses in dance technique with courses of a specialized nature to provide a complete program of study and training in technique and performance. This program is designed to develop skills necessary for a career as a dance performer and to provide extensive pre-professional performance experience. Directed study in dance internship positions provide practical career and occupational experience. Employment opportunities exist in a variety of areas: dance companies; instructor in private dance studios; dancer for commercial stage, television, and film; choreographer/performer in music videos; and production choreographer.
