WHAT
23rd Annual Distinguished Faculty Award Presentation
Phil Hughes, Santa Ana College (SAC) physical science professor, will speak
about the geologic hazards in Southern California. Especially since living
through a magnitude-8 earthquake in Lima, Peru in 2007, earthquakes and their
potential have been a focus for Hughes. That quake left Peru’s southern coast in
ruins, cut off electricity, water and communications, and destroyed some 40,000
homes.
The presentation will cover a look back at the 1862 and 1938 floods that
devastated Orange County and the measures that have been taken since to protect
area residents. Hughes will discuss the potential of “The Big One” on the San
Andreas Fault and discuss why he projects that the worst earthquake for Orange
County will be a smaller, but closer quake on the Newport-Inglewood Fault. He
will also touch upon other hazards, including volcanoes, hurricanes, and
tornadoes.

WHO
Since joining the faculty in 1989, Phil Hughes, SAC professor of
physical science, has had two goals: (1) To teach general education classes to a
large number of students and make them more aware of the physical world around
them, and (2) to produce a small number of students who will major in geology
and transfer to a university and be able to out-compete the students who started
out at the university.
WHY
Every spring, Santa Ana College names the Distinguished Faculty Award recipient,
the highest honor bestowed by colleagues upon a faculty member at the college.
Nominations are made by SAC faculty and students. Selection criteria include
awards and honors, publications, civic involvement, leadership experiences and a
demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching.
HOW
Attendance is free and open to the public.
