EMT Program Information

Emergency Medical Technician

All on-campus EMT classes can be found in the catalog under Emergency Medical Technician 101 (basic course), 105 (skills lab), or 111 (recertification course).

General Information for Fire EMT:

Fire Technology students are required to successfully complete a National Registry EMT course, pass the NREMT Basic exam and obtain California EMT certifcation through a local Emergency Medical Services Authority prior to entering the academy. 
The Basic (or Primary) EMT class is approximately 148 hours long. Successful completion of the class permits the student to take the NREMT EMT Basic exam. Then the successful student must take documentation of passing the NREMT EMT Basic exam to the local EMSA to complete certification.
The certifying exam for California EMT is the National Registry exam.

Information for On Campus Nursing EMT:

All on-campus EMT classes are listed in the college's class schedule. They are accredited by the Orange County Emergency Medical Services Agency with classes leading to National Registry EMT Basic testing eligibility. Specific criteria for certification and fees are available from the Orange County Health Department's webpage:, or the Orange County EMS Agency at (714)-834-3500.

Class Hours: 92 Lecture, 84.5 Laboratory total.
Prerequisite: Valid CPR Card for Health Care Providers from the American Heart Association
Basic course for EMT. Satisfies requirements for County/State EMS Authority. Prepares student to take O.C.E.M.S./ National Registry certifying exam for state certification. May be repeated.
Emergency Medica Technician 105
Clinical EMT Skills Laboratory
Unit(s): 0.5
Class Hours: 24 Laboratory total. Supervised use of skills lab to assist the student in development of clinical competency and mastery of psychomotor skills. Hours verified by instructor. May be repeated. Grade: Pass/No Pass Only. Open Entry/Open Exit.
Emergency Medical Technician 111
Recertification for EMT 1-Basic
Unit(s): 2
Class Hours: 32 Lecture total. Prerequisite: Valid EMT 1 (Basic) certificate or equivalent within past two years. Valid CPR card: Health Care Provider.
Update emergency medical techniques, equipment, and EMSA policies. Meets state requirements for EMT-1 Basic recertification.
