Attention!!!!

Potential students who have a letter from the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN): 

If you have a letter from the BRN indicating you need to take courses requiring obstetric and/or pediatric and psychiatric content, please contact the Health Sciences/Nursing Office to make an appointment to discuss procedures.

If you have a letter from the BRN indicating you need to take courses requiring ONLY psychiatric content, you will need to contact a different Nursing Program as Santa Ana College's Nursing Program is not accepting new students to the third semester which is where the psychiatric content is placed in the curriculum.

If you have a letter from the BRN inicating you need to take courses requiring medical/surgical content (regardless if other content is needed or not), you will need to complete the entire Nursing Program; therefore, you would need to apply through the multi-criteria admission process and be selected to enter the program as any other applicant. Please see the multi-criteria admission process information in the First Semester Entry Information link.

 
 
Advanced Placement/LVN-RN Students:
 
Letters of "Continued Interest" will be mailed in April, 2013. If a student does not respond to the letter by the stated deadline, the student's name will be removed from the entry list.

 
Advance Placed/LVN-RN Students:
 
PLEASE NOTE: Effective January, 2011 for all advance placed students: you will be required to pass a diagnostic assessment test. Santa Ana College utilizes the Test of Essentials Academic Skills (TEAS). It tests math, English, reading and science. All students are encouraged to log on to www.atitesting.com for study material and other useful resources and information.
 
When you have been notified that a space is available for you to enter the program, you will be required to pass Version V of the TEAS test if you have not already done so. If you have already passed the test, you must have ATI provide an official copy of your score.
 
If you do not pass the TEAS test on your first attempt, your name will be removed from the list awaiting your re-test. You must contact Counseling for remediation, complete the remediation, and re-take the test. Generally, remediation takes six months to one year to complete. A student must show documented remediation after failing the test (anywhere) or wait at least one year before attempting the test again. If you do not pass the re-test, your name will be removed from the entry list.

Process for placement on the Nursing Entry List as an Advanced Placement Student or LVN:

1- You must become a student at SAC or SCC by completing a college application and obtaining a Student ID Number (call Admissions and Records at 714/564-6005 for college application questions).
»- If you wish to be advanced placed you are required to meet with the program director. Please call the Health Sciences/Nursing Office at 714/564-6825 to make an appointment.
 
»- A student's name is placed on only one semester's entry list, to be determined by the Program Director.
2- Attending a Nursing Information Orientation given by the SAC Counseling Department (which can be reached at 714/564-6103) is suggested.
 
3- Eligibility for placement on the Nursing Entry List is based upon completion of prerequisite classes. The prerequisites are:
Anatomy (Biology 239)
 
Human Physiology (Biology 249)
 
Health Microbiology (Biology 139) {General Microbiology (Biology 229) is accepted}
 
Freshman Composition (English 101/101H)
» Science courses must have been completed within five (5) years prior to the student being added to the entry list.
 
» All students must submit their official high school transcripts to Admissions and Records.
 
» If you have completed any courses at another college, you must submit official transcripts to Admissions and Records.
 
» For students currently on the entry list, the completed prerequisites require a grade of "C" or higher.
 
» Effective Fall 2011, the completed prerequisites require an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher.

4- Once the prerequisites have been completed, a Nursing Prerequisite Verification form (Nursing Application) can be picked up from Room R-213, located on the second floor of Russell Hall, or obtained online here. Complete the application and return it to R-213 in person or mail it to:

» THERE IS NO SUBMISSION DEADLINE FOR ADVANCED PLACED NURSING APPLICATIONS FOR 2ND AND 4TH SEMESTERS. AS OF JUNE 30, 2011, WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING 3RD SEMESTER, LVN-RN, AND 30-UNIT LVN OPTION APPLICATIONS DUE TO THE EXTENSIVE LENGTH OF THE ENTRY LIST FOR THOSE STUDENTS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
 
» All students who have had their prerequisites verified are placed on the appropriate list in the order in which the prerequisite verification forms were received.
» Due to many students completing their prerequisites at other colleges, the verification process can be prolonged. You will be notified by letter after you have been placed on the Entry List.
 
» Once a student is placed on the list, if there are any changes in address, name and/or phone number, the student must notify the Nursing Office in writing. 5- Advanced Placement/LVN-RN students are required to complete the Role Transition course, N-RN 200*. You will be notified when space is available for you to take N-RN 200.
 
6- Once the Role Transition course, N-RN 200, is successfully completed, you will be notified when space is available in the appropriate semester for entry into the Nursing Program.
 
* The Role Transition course, RN 200 is required prior to entering the third semester. The Role Transition course has content about the conceptual framework, concept mapping, roles of the nurse, communication, fluid and electrolytes, and tests skills and nursing knowledge. Students will be contacted as to when to take the Role Transition course. Upon successful completion of the course and the TEAS Version V test, students will be contacted to enter the program on a space available basis.

Program information:

1- The Program is four semesters in length and begins with RN 101/101L. Students can currently be advanced placed into second or fourth semester. Successful completion of the Program will result in an Associate Degree of Nursing (ADN) as well as eligibility to take the nursing licensing exam (NCLEX-RN). The Santa Ana College Nursing Program is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting.
 
2- The Traditional Program admits students twice each year. Theory courses meet 2 times per week. Clinical courses are 8 or 12 hours for 1 or 2 days per week. Clinical days are usually Mondays and/or Tuesdays; however, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays may also be utilized. The semesters are 16 weeks.
 
3- The Extended Campus Program (ECP) admits students once each year. Theory courses meet 1 day per week in the evening except during the fourth semester when they meet twice per week. Clinical courses are 12 hours on every Saturday or every other Saturday and Sunday. The semesters are 16 to 21 weeks, depending on the semester (1st and 3rd are 21 weeks; 2nd semester is 19 weeks; 4th semester is 16 weeks). The 1st and 3rd semesters begin in July and end in December; the 2nd and 4th semesters begin in January and end in May. ECP theory courses (generally) and Skills and Computer Labs are housed at St. Joseph Hospital of Orange. All students may participate in the Skills and Computer Labs at St. Joseph Hospital of Orange and Santa Ana College.
 
4- Community-based nursing clinical days for both the Traditional and ECP programs are arranged on days other than regular clinical days.
 

How students are chosen from the list:

a- Students who have completed Role Transition and TEAS Version V are notified when space is available in the program.
 
b- Space is created because a student from the previous semester has not progressed for some reason or additional funding is available.
 
c- Re-Entry students are given priority. If space is still available, students will be notified in the order placed on the entry list AND once Role Transition and TEAS testing are completed.
 
d- Space may be available in the Traditional and/or ECP Programs.
 

Important things to consider for entry into the program:

a- Once a student is placed on the list, if there are any changes in address, name and/or phone number, the student must notify the Nursing Office in writing. If we are unable to contact you by phone and/or mail, your name will be removed from the Entry List. Additionally, it is the student's responsibility to notify the college of those same changes.
b- Students have only ONE chance to deny entrance into the program and remain where they currently are on the list. A second denial will result in the student being placed at the bottom of the list. A third denial will result in the student being removed from the list.
 
c- STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM OFF-CAMPUS CLINICAL SITES.
 
d- **Please note** This is considered a full-time program. Students are advised to limit outside employment. Excessive work schedules combined with family and school commitments may contribute to being unsuccessful in the program.
 
Current Advanced Placement/LVN Entry Lists:
To make it easier to find your place on the list, you can use your "Find" command on your computer. This is done by using Ctrl F (PC users) or Apple F (MAC users) when the Entry List page is displayed. Your student ID number may be a 9-digit, 7-digit, or a 6-digit number. 
 
If your student ID number is 9 digits, enter it in groups of three with hyphens in between, for example: XXX-XXX-XXX.
 
If your ID is 7 digits, enter it as one number, for example: XXXXXXX.
 
And, if your ID number only has 6 digits, enter it in groups of three with hyphens in between, placing three zeroes in front, for example: 000-XXX-XXX.

Completion of a Nursing Orientation (call (714) 564-6100 for Santa Ana College Counseling) is strongly advised. Advanced placement in the program may be granted to those students with certain prior experience, vocational nursing, or registered nursing education or equivalent. Advanced Placement/Transfer/Challenge applicants require an individual appointment with the Program Director. Advanced placement students are accepted on a space-available basis. Priority class placement is given to continuing and SAC re-entry students.
 
PLEASE NOTE:  The SAC Nursing Program has had Workforce Investment Act (WIA) funding. A directive from the California Employment Development Department states that programs that receive WIA funding must give priority for entry for the number of spots funded by WIA to Veterans (discharged above a dishonorable discharge) or their eligible spouses after the prerequisites have been met. Service must have been in the active military, naval, or air service, including the National Guard. Proof of discharge is required. An eligible spouse of a veteran means the veteran has to have died from a service-related disability, been MIA, or captured/forcibly detained.
 
October 26, 2011: The SAC Nursing Program has been notified that the WIA funding will be discontinued. No additional students will be added to the program with this funding, effective immediately. Veterans currently on the entry lists will enter the program when space is available.​

****Students who obtain an LVN license while on the 1st or 2nd semester waitlists will be automatically moved to the bottom of our 3rd semsester waitlist as 3rd semester is the entry point for LVN's.
